| Ten Scenes of the West Lake |
Twin Peaks Piercing the Cloud
The Twin peaks are the South Peak and North Peak southwest and northwest to the West Lake respectively. There is a royal stele pavilion of “ Twin Peaks Piercing the Cloud” on the side of Hongchun Bridge. As a matter of fact, South Peak is only 254m above sea level and North Peak 314m above sea level. They are called “peaks” because the West Lake is mostly surrounded by lower hills. As to the origin of the name “ Twin Peaks Piercing the Cloud”, it was said that when the storm was coming, the twin peaks looked partly invisible and partly hidden in the clouds and fogs, as if they wer piercing into the clouds. Hence the name comes.
